Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of December 30, 2005. NEW YORK (AP) -- NSA inadvertently uses banned 'cookies'. "The National Security Agency's Internet site has been placing files on visitors' computers that can track their Web surfing activity despite strict federal rules banning most of them." ... and in response the Bush Administration ... WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Inquiry into leak of NSA spying program launched. "The Justice Department has opened an investigation into leaks to the media about the National Security Agency's classified domestic surveillance program. The program authorizes the NSA to eavesdrop on Americans without first seeking permission from a court for a search warrant." So our justice department is launching an investigation into who "leaked" a blatant violation, by our President, of our Constitutional Right to Privacy ... instead of launching an investigation into what other violations of our Constitutional Rights, our President may have authorized? I guess, as my father has shared with me many times: "Power corrupts ... and absolute power is even better."

China is an ecological disaster: "air pollution (greenhouse gases, sulfur dioxide particulates) from reliance on coal produces acid rain; water shortages, particularly in the north; water pollution from untreated wastes; deforestation; estimated loss of one-fifth of agricultural land since 1949 to soil erosion and economic development; desertification; trade in endangered species .... After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled." BBC, China -- Fears over Chinese water supply. "The underground water supplies of around 90% of China's cities have been polluted by rapid economic growth, a senior environmental official has said. Zhang Lijun, Deputy Director of the State Environmental Protection Administration, called the problem "serious", the China News Service said." SHANGHAI (AP) China admits 300 million drink unsafe water "About 300 million people living in China's vast countryside drink water tainted by chemicals and other contaminants, the Chinese government reported Thursday, in the latest official acknowledgment of mounting risks from widespread pollution. The most common threat to water supplies, after drought, is chemical pollutants and other harmful substances that contaminate water supplies for 190 million people, Chinese news media cited E Jingping, a vice-minister for water resources. As of July 2005, China has a population of 1,306,313,812 and with it's incredible economic growth, the majority of the population now has indoor plumbing ... share with me ... can you picture the sound of 1.3 BILLION people flushing their toilets at the same time? <whispering> ..... Personally, I think that was the real reason for the Asian Tsunami.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Florida teen skips school, sneaks to Iraq. "Maybe it was the time the taxi dumped him at the Iraq-Kuwait border, leaving him alone in the middle of the desert. Or when he drew a crowd at a Baghdad food stand after using an Arabic phrase book to order. Or the moment a Kuwaiti cab driver almost punched him in the face when he balked at the $100 fare. But at some point, Farris Hassan, a 16-year-old from Florida, realized that traveling to Iraq by himself was not the safest thing he could have done with his Christmas vacation. And he didn't even tell his parents." Just how does a 16 year old kid from Florida get to Baghdad, (short of enlisting)? So share with me .... if a 16 year old kid from Florida can get to Iraq ... just how difficult is it for Fundamentalist Islamic nutcases from around the world to join the terrorists there?

(CNN) -- Hubble finds new moons, rings around Uranus. "New images from the Hubble Space Telescope show the planet Uranus has two additional moons and two faint rings never observed before. The new moons, which were named Mab and Cupid, bring the total number of satellites orbiting Uranus to 27." Ahhhh .... but as a Dear Friend, who happens to be a Star Trek fan wondered .... did they find Klingons on Uranus?

SAUGUS, Massachusetts (AP) -- Chinese food popular for holiday diners. "It's not exactly chestnuts roasting on an open fire. But for many people, Moo Goo Gai Pan or maybe even the Pu Pu Platter are traditional dishes for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and throughout the holidays, Chinese restaurants do some of their briskest business of the year ... Jewish customers account for much of Wong's business this time of year. Chinese food has long been a popular destination for Jews on Christmas, when few other restaurants are open." Kashrut , is "the body of Jewish law dealing with what foods we can and cannot eat and how those foods must be prepared and eaten." To keep Kosher, you can eat any animal that has cloven hooves and chews its cud. (sorry, no camel, rock badger, rabbit, pork, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and insects .... I guess horses, dogs and cats would be OK.) As for fowl? No predators or scavengers. On the sea food side, you can eat anything that has fins and scales. No shrimp, lobster, oysters and calamari .... don't know about catfish, (no scales). "Ritual slaughter is known as shechitah, and the person who performs the slaughter is called a shochet, both from the Hebrew root Shin-Chet-Tav, meaning to destroy or kill. The method of slaughter is a quick, deep stroke across the throat with a perfectly sharp blade with no nicks or unevenness. This method is painless, causes unconsciousness within two seconds, and is widely recognized as the most humane method of slaughter possible. Another advantage of shechitah is that ensures rapid, complete draining of the blood, which is also necessary to render the meat kosher." The use of wines and other grape products made by non-Jews is prohibited. And there is a strict separation between diary and meat: "Utensils (pots, pans, plates, flatware, etc., etc.) must also be kosher. A utensil picks up the kosher "status" (meat, dairy, pareve, or treyf) of the food that is cooked in it or eaten off of it, and transmits that status back to the next food that is cooked in it or eaten off of it. Thus, if you cook chicken soup in a saucepan, the pan becomes meat. If you thereafter use the same saucepan to heat up some warm milk, the fleishig status of the pan is transmitted to the milk, and the milchig status of the milk is transmitted to the pan, making both the pan and the milk a forbidden mixture." Interestingly enough, there are Kosher Chinese Restaurants. Makes sense when you consider there are Chinese Jews, (I didn't know that.) Aren't you wondering if there is such a thing as Kosher Sweet and Sour Pork?

FREMONT, California (AP) -- When Chihuahuas attack. "A pack of angry Chihuahuas attacked a police officer who was escorting a teenager home after a traffic stop, authorities said. The officer suffered minor injuries, including bites to his ankle, Detective Bill Veteran said. The five Chihuahuas escaped the 17-year-old boy's home and rushed the officer in the doorway Thursday, authorities said." From what I understand, the police used tiny little Tasers so subdue the dogs, (apparently they were retired attack dogs from the local Taco Bell). The Tasers were necessary because a Spanish interpreter was not available.

BBC - Kangaroos 'scared by own noise'. "Australian farmers could be about to get an unusual new weapon to protect their crops from rampaging kangaroos. Researchers in Melbourne have found that these voracious marsupials can be scared off by the thumping sound of their own large feet on the ground ... a recording of a 'roo thumping its foot appears to have been quite a breakthrough. This is the noise these macropods make when they sense danger before taking flight. Using the animal's own alarm system could be what irate farmers have been looking for." Just for your information .... I could not find any information as to whether Kangaroo is Kosher, (perhaps I should ask my Dear Rabbi Friend, Jacques Cukiekorn ?) ... I did find out that Australian Kosher Chinese Restaurants don't serve, Sweet and Sour 'Roo.

Sitting here editing these Ramblings and thinking about 2006. This past year is waning and the promise of a new year is on the horizon. On the evening news, more Iraqis killed by other Iraqis. I have no doubt the Sunni, Shia and Turk factions will wind up in a civil war, once we pull out. I offered my solution a couple of years ago: pull our troops to the boarder and seal it and let the Iraqi folk fight it out. Whomever wins, (obviously the worst of the worst), move back in and snuff them .... repeat step one ... until only Fundamentalist Christians are left. An elegant solution, (because then, Fundamentalist Christians will have a "homeland" of their own), don't you think? [I wonder if there are any Kosher Chinese Restaurants in Baghdad?] Susan and will spend a quiet evening at home tomorrow night: just me and the person who makes my life worth living ... holding each other ... and welcoming in a New Year. I will think about and pray for our men and women in uniform, (care to join me?) ... living the beginning of a New Year, NOT surrounded by their loved ones. Next person in uniform you see, take a moment ... reach out your hand, look them square in the face ... and say .... "Thank you for your service." I do. Be and sleep well, our best is sitting on a line drawn somewhere, away from all they love and hold dear, so YOU can. If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. From Susan and I .... a Warm Brotherly Happy New Year Hug to you and yours.
