Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of December 29, 2006. When I was growing up, my father had a saying: "The skinniest horse has the most flies." I really didn't understand what he was talking about, until today. After standing in a very long line, I paid my personal property taxes for 2006. I didn't feel bad doing so, knowing that the folks a few miles down the road, in Jackson County, pay almost twice as much. Other people suffering more makes me feel like I'm suffering less.  I don't have a problem paying for services I use ... like the money allocated for county infrastructure. What does chap my grits is paying for things I don't use:  like 63% of my property taxes funding the Holden School District, (my children went to a private Catholic School), 5% funding an ambulance service that sent me a $780.00 bill to transport Susan to Warrensburg Regional Health Center, the one time we had to use the service, (that's about $52.00/ mile) and 4.5% to fund a library I have never been in. I fully understand the societal benefits of universal public education, a public library and having access to an ambulance should the need arise. But why should the funding for these benefits be based on a tax on what you have worked your buns off to accumulate? Don't we already pay a federal and state income tax? A sales tax? A use tax? We contribute to charities and we tithe at church. I think most middle class Americans, like you and I are getting skinnier, while the flies hounding us are getting bigger and more numerous. We need to elect a fly-swatter!!!

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Oops! Unruly flier slaps undercover air marshal. "A US Airways passenger faced charges of interfering with a flight crew Thursday after he apparently unknowingly slapped an undercover federal air marshal, said an official familiar with the case. The man, who'd been drinking liquor, threw a mid-air temper tantrum Wednesday night after attendants refused to serve him any more alcohol during his flight from Washington's Reagan National Airport and Fort Myers, Florida, the official said. The passenger then slapped a fellow passenger, who happened to be an undercover air marshal assigned to the flight, said the official." I was unable to determine the name of the Congressman involved ... <whispering> .... whom ever it is, they face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000.00 fine.

SAVANNAH, Georgia (Court TV) -- Debutante's killer curses, flips off judge at sentencing. "A Georgia man gave the middle finger to a judge who sentenced him to life in prison plus 40 years for the shooting death of a Savannah debutante during a botched robbery. Michael Thorpe, 26, gestured and shouted "F--- democracy!" as deputies led him Saturday from the courtroom where Chatham County Superior Court Judge Penny Haas Freeseman sentenced him for shooting Jennifer Ross on Christmas Eve 2005. " ... rumor has it Judge Penny smiled and replied, "Give my regards to Bubba". .... and another mensa award winner: BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- Typo takes tourist 13,000 km out. "A 21-year-old German tourist who wanted to visit his girlfriend in the Australian metropolis Sydney landed 13,000 kilometers (8,077 miles) away near Sidney, Montana, after mistyping his destination on a flight booking Web site."  So, there are direct flights from Berlin, Germany to Sidney, Montana? Wouldn't you wonder why you are flying to Sydney, Australia by way of New York? According to the article. he apparently sat in the airport in Sidney, Montana for 3 days, while his family and friends took up a collection and sent him $600.00 so he could book a flight to Sydney, Australia. A flight from Sidney, Montana to Sydney, Australia costs $600.00? If you were a member of this young man's family, would you trust him to book any flight? (The least expensive flight I could find on Travelocity is a United Flight for $2,571.00.) He may be sitting in an airport in Sydney, California.

WASHINGTON (Dec. 27) - Steamy Blog Lawsuit Heads for Trial. "When Robert Steinbuch discovered his girlfriend had discussed intimate details about their sex life in her online diary, the Capitol Hill staffer didn't just get mad. He got a lawyer ... Lurid testimony about spanking, handcuffs and prostitution aside, the Washingtonienne case could help establish whether people who keep online diaries are obligated to protect the privacy of the people they interact with offline. " Certainly an interesting legal issue. I suppose it will further define what constitutes a "reasonable expectation of privacy". As a practical matter, doesn't seem much different to me then some of the testimony adduced during a good old fashioned knock down drag out dissolution trial!! You learn alot as a "loves aftermath" lawyer. Years ago, I had a client walk into my office with a box of "toys", half of which I had no clue what they did, how they were used or even what part of the human anatomy they dealt with ... still don't know and have no desire in my old age to find out. I returned them to my client when the case was over.

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Wah, wow, hoo! Tree apes sing warning songs. "Turns out humans aren't the only primates using songs to warn of life's dangers and travails. White-handed gibbons in Thailand's forests have been found to communicate threats from predators by singing -- the first time the behavior has been discovered among non-human primates, researchers said Wednesday." Well, that should a nail in the "Creation Science" argument. Doesn't this prove that "Natural Selection" is a viable theory? It is good to finally discover the origins of country music ... and of course in a different branch of the musical tree: "gangsta rap".

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -- Pope on the pitch? Vatican may start soccer team. "The Vatican may be the world's smallest state, but it is thinking of mustering a soccer team that could compete with the world's best, according to Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone. "I don't rule out that in the future the Vatican could form a top soccer team of the level of Inter, Roma," and other Serie A sides, Bertone was reported as saying in the Italian media." Frankly, I can see all kinds of problems cropping up. Would you have to be ordained to be on the team? Who would coach it? Would the Pope have the final say on any plays? Would they have an offering during half-time? And share with me ... what would the team name be?

Sitting here editing these Ramblings and listening to the evening news. Sadam is expected to be executed within the next few hours. I doubt many will mourn his passing. In Canada, a 3,000 year old, 41 square mile ice shelf, one of 6, has broken off the arctic shelf and may pose a threat to shipping ... while we are considering putting Polar Bears on the endangered species list due to global warming. Reasonable, honorable, highly educated people differ as to what is causing global warming but the undeniable fact remains ... it is real and it is happening at an accelerating rate. Rising sea levels will change national boundaries, lead to the extinction of a yet unknown number of animal and plant species and force us to reallocate food production resources. We all face challenges in the coming new year. No one knows what this new year will bring. There are changes to be made for the benefit of Solo and Small Firm Lawyers. There are little furry lives to rescue, (Susan spent last Saturday making "Doggie" cookies for her furry babies. If you have an interest, her recipes are here: http://www.chappysplace.net/recipes.html Easy to make and alot cheaper than buying them store made, (also healthier)). But the one, absolute given remains ... absent either of us "passing" ... Susan and I will face each challenge together, we form a united front, we are one person ... and for that, tonight, I will say a prayer of Thanks. This past year, with Susan at my side during the campaign ... and having Susan at my side when the results came in, we both won. Enjoy your New Years celebrations and remember our men and women in uniform ... who are sacrificing so you may do so in the safety of your home, with your friends and loved ones. If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. A Warm Brotherly New Years Hug, to you and yours.

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri).
