A MISSOURI LAWYER'S
FRIDAY NIGHT RAMBLINGS
Missouri Solo and Small Firm Internet Group
DECEMBER 19, 2003
The "Ramblings" are a series of emails sent, for the most part, on Friday night, to the Missouri Solo and Small Firm Internet Group, ("the List"), listserve. "The List" is a "support" group, a virtual "family", comprised of Missouri Solo and Small Firm Lawyers. It is not affiliated with the Missouri Bar Association: "the List" is self governing and self moderating. Compiled here are the Ramblings for 2002 - 2003. They contain my random thoughts and observations on current events and my life as a Solo Lawyer. They are the Ramblings of a small town, (Holden, population 2,700), Missouri, country lawyer.

Greets and Huggers. Posted on my webpage, the evening of December 19, 2003. On Sunday watched Sadam as a captive. Actually felt sorry for him, (just as I would for a rabid dog). It doesn't mean the end of terrorist activity in Iraq, (nor anywhere else for that matter). Keep in mind 300 hard core Irish Republican Army members have kept a significant portion of the British Army occupied for the past 70 + years. In a country where arms and explosives are more common than the tiny piles of Yorkie poop scooped at Pat Reynold's house, there is no way of defending against a "roadside bomb". There is no way of defending against a "suicide bomber". Until persons of good will, from all nations, band together and eradicate the causes that lead to violent dissention, that make violent dissention, the taking of life, more seductive than causing change by peaceful means, we will have to deal with terrorists. Although, sadly, there will be more loss of American life, there is also hope. If there is an incentive that caused Libya to renounce terrorism and abandon it's weapons of mass destruction, (and the underlying programs), then we only need to find the requisite incentive to turn others around.
Watched Strom Thurmond's little girl, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, (now 65 years old) talk about her father on CBS last Sunday night. Her mother was black ... her father white .. and eventually a US Senator ... for years a staunch racist, until he saw the light. Wonder what "light" he saw in 1928, when he was 22 and Essie Mae's mother was 16, a maid in his families house, when they ..... hmmmm .... got together. Sure wasn't a white light. Guess it only goes to show .... "men have feet of clay" .... and for some, the clay reaches all the way to their groin. 'Nuff said.
An "oversight" committee was appointed this week for the SFIG. Lobbied against it. But the Chairman of the Solo and Small Firm Practice Committee deemed it necessary to do so. He is the chairman and has the final say. As for me, I no longer feel a sense of "family" on the SFIG, (I'm sure some do). Just lawyers asking questions and seeking quick answers. Just another Bar committee. Maybe it was necessary .... maybe it was not. At this point it doesn't matter. What's done is done. Guess we will see what happens.
A victory for our Constitution today .... "The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, in a 2 to 1 ruling, gave the administration 30 days to release Jose Padilla, who allegedly plotted to explode a radioactive "dirty bomb." He has been confined to a South Carolina brig without access to an attorney for 19 months." I have never feared an outside force destroying my America: when attacked, like on 12/7/1941 or on 9/11/2001 ..... Americans banded together, stood/stand shoulder to shoulder and fought/fight back. We will win the war on terrorism as well .... provided we don't destroy ourselves by reigning in the very liberties that make us American. The "Patriot Act" was a knee jerk reaction to 9/11 .... cooler heads in our Judicial Branch, are now dismantling those portions which restrict our liberties. The vision of our Founding Fathers, never ceases to amaze me.
Sitting here editing these Ramblings, sipping on a snifter of BBB over crushed ice and watching the evening news. (Also watching "Tuxie", Susan's newest "fur baby" scoot a piece of dog food across the floor). The fireplace is cranking out heat, Susan has "cinnamon" scented candles lit ..... Ft Timmerman ... smells yummy and full of holiday cheer. On the news, the CDC has declared the flu outbreak an "epidemic". Sadly, 42 children have already died from the disease and the "flu season" isn't even here yet! Shots are still available. If you don't want one ..... fine ...... but at least make sure your kid gets one!! Haven't finished my Christmas Shopping yet .... don't have a clue what Susan "wants" .... geez ...... every time she talks about looking at "something" and smiles ..... I just run out and get it for her, (you have no idea how much Susan's smiles make my heart sing!! :) Makes it tough to buy her a Christmas present, (the good news ..... she LOVES jewelry ... guess another diamond something or other is in her future!) I know she must be grumbling as well ... hehehe .... if I want something, after checking with her, I just go get it. With Libya renouncing terrorism and inviting the world in to watch it dismantle it's weapons of mass destruction programs, the world seems a tad bit safer tonight ... all is well and safe at Ft Timmerman. Our men and women in uniform are still in harms way .... (please pray for their safe return) .... and tonight, as I drift off to sleep holding the most wonderful partner a man can have, I will say a prayer for them as well, for Susan and I, for our America and for you. Be and sleep well, the best there is, is on watch. If my post offends .... I apologize, that is not my intent.
Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri).
