Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of December 1, 2006. An interesting phrase I saw in a post on the SFIG this week: "Human Freedom". Just what does it mean? Share with me why "Human Freedom" isn't an oxymoron? We have survived as a species because we evolved to become inherently social animals. Being a social animal, "I" is a factor but not the defining quality. Put another way, you are genetically tweaked to become a member of society, (by society, I mean a member of a social group consisting of family, several families, a tribe ... or a nation), because doing so grants an individual the greatest chance of surviving ... and procreating. We have become who we are by "Natural Selection". like it or not, you give up some of your freedoms, in essence grant society a "property right" in some of your behaviors, (like the taxes you pay), by electing to become a member of that society. By being "human", you have shed or at the very least, have been conditioned to control your baser instincts. Isn't that a loss of "freedom"?

Our army has a video game on line. It is called "America's Army". According to the website, there are more than 7.6 million players. I suppose it is a viable recruiting tool. I personally don't like "war" games. I can see no fun, no glory, in killing other human beings ... even in a game.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Neanderthal bone gives DNA clues. "A bone fragment that scientists had initially ignored has begun to yield secrets of the Neanderthal genome, launching a new way to learn about the stocky and muscular relative of modern humans, scientists say .... Such research will "serve as a DNA time machine that will tell us about the biology and aspects of Neanderthals that we could never get" otherwise, Rubin said." Rumor has it the NFL is funding the study, (some linebackers are into genealogy.)

CNN HEALTH --- The Big O: Fireworks? Or is your sex life less than explosive? "When Meg Ryan faked an orgasm at the deli in When Harry Met Sally, audiences were embarrassed and a little shocked. That was 1989. Today? Orgasms -- real ones --are everywhere ... The truth is, only one in four women regularly has an orgasm during intercourse, and a third rarely or never do. This news may be reassuring -- or depressing ... The upshot: You don't have to have an orgasm to be satisfied. But if it's an orgasm you want, expect the unexpected. "Orgasms are like snowflakes; every one is unique," Solot says. "They can be more or less intense depending on a zillion factors, everything from the kind of stimulation to how long the buildup to how connected you're feeling." [Note: interesting article: http://www.health.com/health/article/0,23414,1542435,00.html ] Ok. I read the article and the supplied link. So share with me .... does having a super "O" offset the pain ... <shuddering> ... of childbirth? .... <whispering> ... Having watched my two children be born ... I think I'll just stick with the plain old "O's" men experience!

NEW PORT RICHEY, Florida (AP) -- Woman's body found behind bookcase. "A woman's body was found wedged upside-down behind a bookcase in the home she shared with relatives who had spent nearly two weeks looking for her. A spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said Mariesa Weber's death was not suspicious. Family members said they believe she fell over as she tried to adjust the plug of a television behind the bookshelf ... Weber, 38, came home October 28 and greeted her mother, then wasn't seen again" They spent two weeks looking for her? Two weeks is a long time for a body at room temperature. Why didn't they just follow their noses?

LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- Teaching Thanksgiving from a different perspective. "Teacher Bill Morgan walks into his third-grade class wearing a black Pilgrim hat made of construction paper and begins snatching up pencils, backpacks and glue sticks from his pupils. He tells them the items now belong to him because he "discovered" them ... Even American Indians are divided on how to approach a holiday that some believe symbolizes the start of a hostile takeover of their lands." Only in California ... would 3rd graders have teachers with a "social conscience", (whatever that really means!). So third graders are ready to comprehend social injustice? Third graders are ready to understand/comprehend the rape of Native American culture? Perhaps Mr. Morgan needs to focus on what Thanks Giving is about? Next thing you know, Mr. Morgan will be putting on a turkey suit to raise awareness about the abuses on turkey farms. Third graders would really gobble that up .... <groan> ... Ok, Ok, Ok ... that was bad!

CHIANG MAI, Thailand (AP) -- Blue videos spark panda love, researchers say. "After years of painstaking research, scientists say they have unleashed a baby boom among one of the world's most beloved but endangered animals, China's giant panda. A bit of panda porn has helped too, they say. "It works," enthuses Zhang Zhihe, a leading Chinese expert, about showing uninitiated males DVDs of fellow pandas mating." Doesn't that beg the question ... who did the Chinese pirate the Panda Porn DVD from? ... <whispering> .... don't you wonder what kind of pervert makes them? ... and how? Is it people wearing panda suits? [NOTE: There actually IS a panda porn site. DO NOT click on the link if you are offended by explicit graphics of pandas engaging in sex.]

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Global warming already killing species, analysis says. "Animal and plant species have begun dying off or changing sooner than predicted because of global warming, a review of hundreds of research studies contends ... At least 70 species of frogs, mostly mountain-dwellers that had nowhere to go to escape the creeping heat, have gone extinct because of climate change, the analysis says. It also reports that between 100 and 200 other cold-dependent animal species, such as penguins and polar bears are in deep trouble." Pandas are doing quite well. Must be the porn.

DER SPIEGAL -- My Half-Year of Hell With Christian Fundamentalists. "When Polish student Michael Gromek, 19, went to America on a student exchange, he found himself trapped in a host family of Christian fundamentalists. What followed was a six-month hell of dawn church visits and sex education talks as his new family tried to banish the devil from his soul ... Things began to go wrong as soon as I arrived in my new home in Winston-Salem, where I was to spend my year abroad. For example, every Monday my host family would gather around the kitchen table to talk about sex. My host parents hadn't had sex for the last 17 years because -- so they told me -- they were devoting their lives to God." Isn't that a classic Christian conundrum? Talking ... instead of living/doing? At least they didn't hit him with "Polish" jokes. I heard about a fundamentalist Christian teenager who was an exchange student in Poland. His host family ran an abortion clinic. I wonder how his year went?

DER SPEIGAL -- Meet Hitler, the Bed-Wetting Drug Addict. "German cinema breaks new ground in January with its first comedy about Hitler. Jewish director Dani Levy is following in the footsteps of Charlie Chaplin, maker of "The Great Dictator," with a decidedly unsympathetic portrayal of Hitler as a bed-wetting drug addict who is making the world suffer for his beatings as a child. Hitler likes to play with his toy battleship in the bath, wets his bed, can't get an erection and is addicted to drugs he keeps in his giant globe, according to Germany's first comedy about the Führer, made by Jewish director Dani Levy." "The Great Dictator", released in 1940, was Chaplin's first sound movie and took almost 2.5 years to make. Older Germans have carried the Holocaust guilt for almost 61 years. It is a crime to have any Nazi memorabilia in Germany or to publically deny the Holocaust. When my aunt and uncle came to visit several years ago, they saw a video tape, a compilation of Hitler's speeches, I had. They were amazed I could legally have it. My offer to play it for them, led to the only argument I can remember them having. My uncle was fascinated ... while my aunt got angrier and angrier ... culminating in her calling Hitler a schweinehund and a waldheini, (there really is no English translation ... unless my Dear Friend Hermann E knows of one.) Frankly, I think it is good that Germans can finally laugh at the darkest parts of their history as a nation.

NEW YORK (Nov. 26, AOL NEWS) -- Researchers Debunk Myth That Money Doesn't Buy Happiness. "Does money buy happiness? It's sometimes said that scientists have found no relationship between money and happiness, but that's a myth, says University of Illinois psychologist Ed Diener. The connection is complex, he says. But in fact, very rich people rate substantially higher in satisfaction with life than very poor people do, even within wealthy nations, he says." Which obviously explains why you don't see rich people standing on street corners giving their money away ... so they can enjoy the satisfaction of being poor. So share with me ... how many poor people funded a study to show how happy/satisfied they are?

Sitting here editing these Rambling, sipping on some Port and watching the evening news. Susan is in the living room putting up Christmas decorations. Little stockings, (with the name of all her furry children), hanging from the fireplace. I will post an image when she is done. She has hand made all our Christmas cards and they will go out this weekend, (you want one? Send Susan a Christmas/Chanukah/Holiday greeting ... she is polite enough to send one back! :) I never sent out cards when I was single. Strange, how the female of our species, can house break even the most crude of us. I wonder? Do gay couples have to go through the same "house breaking" learning curve? If so ... who is the trainor and who is the trainee? Maybe, they take turns? I will say a prayer of thanks tonight for Susan, (I know she is the trainor!!) ... she brings gentleness and culture to our partnership and certainly reminds me some "male" behaviors are inappropriate in mixed company ... <whispering> ... I avoid making disgusting biological noises in public now and no longer "adjust" certain body parts. I will also say a prayer for our men and women in uniform, (care to join me?) ... Please, Please, Please, God ... keep them safe and let them come home safe and soon! Be and sleep well ... the best there is, is on watch so you can safely shovel snow. :) If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. As always ...

A Warm Brotherly Hug

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri)
