Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of October 21, 2005. You
and I watched hospitals go from a public service model ... to a "for
profit" model. So now, we are financially raped, by a corporate health
care system You and I have watched health insurance companies go from a public
interest/social model .... to a for profit model. So now, we have 40 million
Americans unable to afford health care. The mantra? Capitalism, the
"private sector" is the most cost efficient way of providing
services. The best way of getting the most bang for the buck. Doesn't it seem
like there is a trend toward "privatizing" traditional governmental
functions. For example, we now see "For Profit" prisons, (Corrections
Corporation of America, is the sixth largest corrections system in the
nation, behind only the federal government and four states). There is also
renewed interest in reverting back to "For
Profit" school systems, (Edison
Schools Inc. estimates that in the 2005-06 school year it will serve more
than 330,000 public school students in 25 states, the District of Columbia, and
the United Kingdom). So .... how about we go back to a "For Profit"
military? Mercenaries - R - US, Inc.. Think of the cost savings! They provide
their own equipment and train their employees. You and I would not have to pay
for retirements, provide or pay for medical insurance, (VA hospitals), no
military bases to maintain. No aircraft to purchase, (after a lengthy and
expensive development process). Just hire them, on a contact basis, when
needed? Think about it. Makes sense, doesn't it?
.SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, ---- Marijuana May Grow Neurons in the Brain. "Advocates for medical marijuana can take heart over the findings of two Canadian research teams. A synthetic cannabinoid -- similar to the compounds found in marijuana, but substantially stronger -- causes the growth of new neurons and reduces anxiety and depression, investigators at the University of Saskatchewan here reported". The studies were funded by www.cheechandchong.com and www.herbal-smoke-shop.com The bad news? Even with additional neurons, the researches couldn't remember how they conducted the experiment. The good news? They weren't anxious or depressed about it.
Al Jazeera --- Cyber companion for the shy. "Budding Casanovas will soon have a new girl about town to try out their charms on - the Virtual Girlfriend. Designed for third-generation (3G) mobile phones, the computer-animated girlfriend is the brainchild of Nasdaq-listed Artificial Life and looks all set to grind the traditional phone games of Tetris and Snakes into the dirt, using the tip of an exceptionally sharp-looking high heel. ... "You need to follow her every day, otherwise she will get angry with you. Our computers are programmed to recognize phone numbers so we can keep tabs on how often someone interacts with her," said Schoneburg. Like real life, you look after when she is sick, and buy her gifts to keep her happy or offset some callous remark, and like real life gifts of flowers or jewelry will cost you real money, around $HK8 ($1) for a diamond ring." Interesting concept. Suppose, for a sum of money, she would perform Lap[top] Dances? Suppose, for a greater sum of money, you could create a virtual character, who would have virtual sex with her? Is that "prostitution"? Suppose she appeared blatantly underage or a "furry", (an anthropomorphic character). Not my area ... but share with me ..... is virtual sex/porn, for example, obviously underage hamsters, cartoon characters, subject to the same legal prohibitions as regular porn? If so, just who is the victim, we as a society, seek to protect?
Der Spiegel --- Offering Asylum in Chernobyl's No Man's Land. "The dictator of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, is making a cynical offer to refugee asylum seekers. You can stay here, but only if you live in the No Man's Land created by the Chernobyl disaster ... Lukashenko wants to settle 22,000 immigrants in the area around Gomel. They will be able to live in the places abandoned by the population who once lived there. And straightaway they would receive asylum status, which would formally grant them the same rights as Belarussians." Never mind that children in the area around Gomel are 55 times more likely to suffer from thyroid cancer than the average kid. For adults the risk is five to six times higher, Not exactly prime real estate, but for some, desperate enough, it must be better than Afghanistan or Chechnya. I suppose glowing in the dark, is better than being blown up.
Pravda --- Catholic Church no longer trusts the Bible. "Catholic bishops declare that the story of the beginning of the world told in the Bible is full of contradictions. The hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church in Britain has published a teaching document instructing the faithful not to trust the Bible too much. The declaration of the Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland is called The Gift of Scripture. The document has come out right at the time when conservative religious figures are getting particularly active in the West, the USA first of all. Many faithful insist that the creation stories told in Genesis must be taught at schools together with Darwin's evolution theory. They believe that the world appeared according to God's conception." ... and in a related Pravda article --- Satan has moved from Iraq to the US. "In a not so distant future, New Jersey can end up on Papa's black list. It is presumed that many of the places in New Jersey are in fact considered to be hiding places of Lucifer himself. A religious professor of the Indianapolis State University Karl Mason has made such a fascinating discovery. He questioned hundreds of atheists worldwide. Based on acquired data, the professor was able to conclude that the Devil himself has moved to New Jersey at the end of 1995. "Majority of Satanists agree that the Devil has been living in Baghdad until the end of the nineties," reported Mason. "However, it has become too noisy out there and Lucifer decided to find a quieter place in order to produce more evil thoughts and nasty intrigues. As it turns out, New Jersey is the place." I was wondering why folks in New Jersey were not pushing "Creation Science" ... sheesh, and here I thought it was because they could tell the difference between faith and science. I didn't realize, the Devil was blocking them from doing so!!
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- Elderly man drives with body in windshield. "A 93-year-old driver apparently suffering from dementia fatally struck a pedestrian and drove for three miles with the man's body through his windshield, police said. Ralph Parker was stopped after he drove through a tollbooth on the Sunshine Skyway, Traffic Homicide Investigator Michael Jockers said. The toll taker called police, he said." The man suffers from "dementia", and even if he saw the accident, he would have forgotten it immediately. I know Florida has some very large bugs .... and no doubt, some will hit the windshield ... but give me a break .... wouldn't someone's head sticking through your windshield be a pretty good reminder?!!
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Roche agrees to discuss Tamiflu licenses. "With demand for a treatment against bird flu far outstripping its capacity to produce it, the maker of Tamiflu agreed Thursday to meet with four generic drug makers to arrange for them to produce the drug too ... Roche Pharmaceuticals, which holds the exclusive rights to the antiviral agent, has also agreed not to increase the price of sublicenses." while, (CNN) -- Europe, Asia in bird flu clampdown. "Europe and Asia are ordering clampdowns on the movements of birds and people as the scare over avian flu intensifies." ... and .... Extensive H5N1 Human To Human Transmission In Indonesia? "Now WHO is using a new term, called extensive human-to-human transmission. Since WHO has maintained that the 2005 flu pandemic is a phase 3, which involves only rare human-to-human transmission, the focus on extensive human-to-human transmission may also be an admission that the pandemic has progressed beyond phase 3. When the transmission is sustained, the pandemic has reached the final phase, which is phase 6." When the pandemic hits, there is no vaccine, so the only logical course for our government to take, is a quarantine. A shutdown, similar to the shutdown in Toronto, during the 2003 SARS epidemic. Please, humor me. Stockpile enough food for you and your family to last 90 days. Stockpile enough medication for 90 days. And if you have pets .... stockpile what they will need for 90 days. If you are not affected by a quarantine, nothing will go to waste. If nothing else, a good hedge against inflation. If you are affected, with a little foresight, the impact will be de minimus. Please, consider it!.
Sitting here editing these Ramblings, sipping on some Sherry and watching/listening to the evening news. Wilma is playing hell with Cancun, Mexico. 30,000 tourists, waiting out the storm. Strange ... no looting. Folks in Florida are evacuating, (my parents left Wednesday and are safe at Ft Timmerman South, in Whittier, North Carolina). News about FEMA fraud, false damage claims and $2,000.00 debit cards, being given to people not even from the gulf coast. And also, Syria, (specifically, Bashar al-Assad), must be held accountable for the killing of Prime Minister Hariri. Does this moron actually believe G. W. Bush, with over 100,000 of the best trained, most capable troops and armor in the world, at his disposal, would hesitate one moment, to snuff him and his cronies, (especially since they seem to be turning a blind eye on Syria's boarder with Iraq?) I would hate to be his Life Insurance carrier.
Earlier today, listened to my Dear Friend Lyle Gregory on " Voice America", in a debate about "activist judges" .... <whispering> ..... Well done, Lyle!!! Susan is running around Ft Timmerman packing for her trip to Pascagoula on Wednesday, (her father is turning 70 ... and there will be a family reunion). She will be away from me, for 4 nights and 5 days. That is the longest we have ever been apart, (we were apart for two nights, during the "Conference" this year ). She's in the next room ... and I already miss her. Strange, we are together, 24/7, (except the times I'm in court or meeting clients in Grandview), we eat together, sleep together ... but don't "chat" all that much. Knowing her heart is beating in the next room is enough. Just a quick passing kiss, a gentle touch, as we pass eachother .... and most important .... taking a moment, each day .... for me to share with her, how much she means to me, how much I love her .... and she does the same with me. She makes sure, I know, I am her man. Tonight, as I drift of to sleep, I will say a prayer of thanks for that. I will also say a prayer/sending good wishes for our men and women in uniform, (care to join me?) .... <whispering> ..... Please, Please, Please, God .... let them come home safe and soon!!! Be and sleep well. Take a moment to think about your life. Take a moment to be grateful for what you have at your finger tips. There are fellow Americans, in harms way, away from their loved ones .... to make sure you can. If my post offends, I apologize, that is not my intent. As always ....
A Warm Brotherly Hug
