Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of August 5, 2005. I guess there is a reason Africa remains the "Dark Continent". Isn't there a raging AID's epidemic? A military coup in Mauritania. Genocide in Rwanda, Uganda, the Sudan and Zimbabwe? And now, from Der Spiegel, mass starvation in Niger, " While the world was watching the devastating tsunami in South Asia, locusts were busy eating their way through African crops. Now, millions are facing starvation and the World Food Program is struggling to address the crisis. But a lack of media attention has meant that donations have been sparse". Share with me ... when have donations for any form of African relief, been anything, but sparse? Where was the world, or the UN, during the genocides in Rwanda or Uganda, (where is the World, or the UN, NOW, with the on-going genocides in the Sudan and Zimbabwe?) What makes you think the starving children in Niger, have any hope? Until someone discovers something of "strategic interest", Africa will remain the "Dark Continent". As Americans and as a species, in this regard, we have nothing to be proud of. Doesn't this lead credence to what some believe ... dead or starving black children, are just not as important as .... <fill in the blank>.

Interesting discussion this week on the SFIG, "If God created everything, did He create Evil?" Guess the first issue you have to resolve, remains, what is "evil". Isn't "evil" a human construct, defined by our interactive behaviors? As is "good"? Don't we, as human beings, operationally define our behaviors on a limited continuum, with "good" on one end, and "evil" on the other ... as a function of a social context/construct? Much like we differentiate between vices and crimes? A two dimensional model. But if "evil" is socially defined, wouldn't "good", also have to be? We perceive this reality, (including our lives), as having a beginning and an end. Probably out of necessity, because I don't believe we can conceptualize a reality that has no beginning and no end. What if our reality had no beginning and has no end, but instead, is like a two dimensional loop. Picture a strip of paper, red, (evil) on one side and blue, (goodness) on the other .... suppose you twist the paper and tape the two ends together, red to blue and blue to red .... using a pen, you can draw an unending line .... but how would you explain the junction of red to blue and blue to red? Would be a pretty noticeable junction, wouldn't it? But, what if that strip of paper was white .... no noticeable junction? The junction of good and evil, would be definable by the person drawing the line, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it be the same for the junction of light and dark? The junction of hot and cold? What if God didn't create anything but is the name, we have chosen to give the process and that, which, for some, guides the process? What if God, (good) and evil have always existed as part of the same non-ending looped reality? Isn't the basis for our God given "Freedom of Choice" ..... the freedom to define the junction and boarders of that strip of paper .... "good" and "evil", "light" and "dark" ... "hot" and "cold"? Share with me .... <smiling> ....... doesn't the question then become, "What guides the choice?"

Washington, Associated Press, (AP), "Intelligent Design' Gets Bush's Nod. Schools should discuss that explanation of the origin of life along with evolution, he says ... he believed schools should discuss "intelligent design" alongside evolution when teaching students about the creation of life. " Somehow fitting for our President. Evolution is a theory ... evolving, as new discoveries are made to explain our reality, while "Creation Science" just propounds the premise ... if we don't have a clue what is happening, (yet), there must be some higher power making it happen. Share with me how that furthers our understanding, of this reality? Hehehe ... but, certainly is an elegant solution and a way to explain the basis for many of our Presidents' policies, isn't it?

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- "A man who spent 26 years behind bars as Florida's "Bird Road Rapist" was released from prison Wednesday after DNA evidence cleared him in two of the attacks and cast doubt on whether he was responsible for any of the crimes." If we operate, as a society, on the premise that it is better to have a guilty person go free, then have an innocent person imprisoned/put to death ... share with me .... given the possibility of increasingly documented errors/flaws in our system of justice, how can any honorable person justify capitol punishment?

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- "Scientists for the first time have cloned a dog. ... the dog duplicated by South Korea's cloning pioneer, Hwang Woo-suk, is an Afghan hound, a resplendent supermodel in a world of mutts, but ranked by dog trainers as the least companionable and most indifferent among the hundreds of canine breeds". However, rumor has it ... they are really tasty ... stir fried. (Certainly the phrase "puppy mills", will have new meaning in Korea).

LONDON, England (CNN) -- "An English design graduate has created a device to help knitters keep track of the number of stitches they have knitted. Rebecca Spender's "KnitWit" device automatically counts the number of stitches in each row by detecting the movement of the knitting needles" . I understand the device can be modified and incorporated into an electric tooth brush, to make brushing more effective. The British, may finally have a viable solution for "Austin Powers" teeth syndrome.

LINCOLN, Nebraska (AP) -- "Brice Mellen is a whiz at video games such as "Mortal Kombat." In that regard, the 17-year-old isn't much different from so many others his age. Except for one thing: He's blind." An inspiring story. A remarkable young man. So share with me .... does that mean, there is hope for persons with no arms ... developing the ability to comb their hair? (If there is ... would you share that with the Veterans Administration .... there seems to be an increasing need for hope, given there have been 13,198 service members wounded in Iraq.) [I thought long and hard about including this paragraph. Initially, I meant to induce a smile by the shear audacity of the comment. But. any of our men and women in uniform losing limbs is nothing to smile about. Period. There is nothing funny about our Veterans Administration being under funded, under staffed and being unable to serve the needs of our wounded Hero's, For our current generation, seeing a person with missing limbs was unusual, a rare experience .... but will become more common, given, we are again at war. Perhaps the real horror of war, is not the killing. the dead nor the destruction of property ... perhaps the real horror of war, is the altered life of the maimed survivors.]

Sitting here editing these Ramblings, sipping on some Cream Cherry, while watching the evening news. My 2nd BestBuy eMachine Laptop has gone "tits up". When I called BestBuy, they indicated they would honor the extended warrantee, (they would send it in to get it fixed). So. I went out and bought a replacement at Circuit City, an HP Pavilion 8205US. Yesterday, I went to BestBuy and reasoned with them ... they replaced the eMachine with a Toshiba Pen Laptop. Slick unit! On the evening news, a Russian mini sub with 7 crew members is in trouble. While in space, the 7 members of the Shuttle crew wait for re-entry. Both crews working to expand human understanding of this reality and both crews, in jeopardy. Good news for our economy, average salaries and the number of persons employed is up .... guess some folks will be able to afford driving to and from work, (oil prices hit $62.00 a barrel today). And a story about Doctors using medical robots to keep in touch with their post-op patients, (from the comfort of their respective offices). R2D2 making "house calls". <Sigh> .... and more deaths in Iraq. My heart goes out to the families.

Tonight, as I go to sleep holding the best partner a man can have .... I'll think about a particular evil: the absence of love. The inherent despair suffered by those who are willing to kill others, by killing themselves ... die in the name of , at the command of, what they believe to be God. While here, in our America, (on the local evening news), in St Joseph, today, Fred Phelps and his "anti-gay" minions showed up at the funeral of Edward Meyers, (one of the young Marines killed in Iraq, this week), displaying signs of hate ... praising the killers of "A Fag" ... while Edward Meyers' family and wife ... just mourned. I look forward to Mr. Phelps crossing the line ..,. and perhaps having to spend a few overnights in prison, so he will have an opportunity to "turn the other cheek". Be and sleep well, the best there is, is on watch so you can, (would you care to join me in a prayer/sending good wishes for their safe return?) <whispering> .... Please, Please, Please, God ... let them come home safe and soon!! If my post offends, I apologize, that is not my intent. As Always ...

A Warm Brotherly Hug

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri)
