Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of July 29, 2005. Some really crazy news reports this week:

"A Kenyan says he offered Bill Clinton 40 goats and 20 cows for his daughter's hand in marriage five years ago -- and is still waiting for an answer. ... Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor told the East Africa Standard newspaper last week that he wrote to Clinton asking for Chelsea's hand in 2000 during the then-president's visit to Kenya." He should have offered a box of cigars.

"RALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) -- When witnesses are sworn in, the religious texts of non-Christian faiths should be allowed in North Carolina courts along with the Bible, the ACLU argued in a lawsuit filed against the state Tuesday. ... Denying the use of other religious texts would violate the Constitution by favoring Christianity over religions, the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina said in its lawsuit."    hmmm ... perhaps a Bible would be easier to handle, than two stone tablets or a Torah ... and we could change the oath. "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, on your oath according to your religious, quasi religious, agnostic or atheist belief structure? Perhaps the ACLU should look into cases involving things a bit more pressing .... like the ravaging of our civil rights under the Patriot Act.

METHUEN, Mass. (AP), "Coaches on a Little League team filed a protest with the league after an umpire ordered the players to stop speaking Spanish during a state tournament game this week. ... Coaches said the order demoralized the Methuen players and cost the team the game." Apparently, the umpire was concerned that the coach or manager was using a language other than English, to communicate 'illegal' instructions onto the playing field. "The umpire simply overstepped his authority, and there was no malicious intent." Doesn't that beg the question, "Can you send in illegal instructions in English"? Besides, isn't Spanish the defacto language of professional baseball now?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- "Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist on Friday threw his support behind House-passed legislation to expand federal financing for human embryonic stem cell research, breaking with President Bush and religious conservatives in a move that could impact his prospects for seeking the White House in 2008. "It's not just a matter of faith, it's a matter of science," Frist, R-Tennessee, said on the floor of the Senate." The reaction from the Christian Defense Coalition, was swift. "Senator Frist cannot have it both ways. He cannot be pro-life and pro-embryonic stem cell funding," said Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the group. "Nor can he turn around and expect widespread endorsement from the pro-life community if he should decide to run for president in 2008." Wow! A conservative republican who actually understands, the difference between an abortion and the various sources of embryonic stem cells? These must indeed be the "end times". Course, the fact that most Americans support this line of research, had no bearing on Senator Frist's decision. It is a "matter of science" ... not "faith", (nor politics nor the latest "polls".)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- "The U.S. Senate has voted to increase monitoring of known sex offenders, with one lawmaker saying many receive less surveillance than Martha Stewart got after lying about a stock trade." That's the good news. The bad news .... the law does not apply to former Presidents and members of Congress.

SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) -- "The endangered gray nurse shark is its own worst enemy, its young eat each other in the womb, so Australian scientists have a radical rescue plan to artificially inseminate and breed the ocean predator in test-tubes ... a common problem trying to breed sharks in aquariums is their reluctance to mate." I wonder if this applies to "puppy sharks" as well?

Sitting here editing these Ramblings, checking the news and sipping on some Creme Sherry. Today is my daughters 20th birthday, (she came out to Ft Timmerman last night). She is back in my life and I am again, part of hers. Strange, the feeling you get, when your kid, puts her arms around you and says, "I love you dad." She is absolute proof, that my ex-wife had good attributes, (course, she gave them to our daughter ... hehehe .... I kept mine :) Susan made her a birthday card, (Susan is now into "Scrapbooking" and card making) and I contributed a little green paper. Sheesh, I remember watching my daughter make a grand entrance into this life, (this nasty looking, purple, fuzzy thing ... with a damn healthy set of lungs!! That somehow, cleaned up well. ) .... and today, she is a young woman! .... (with a boy friend, who, I must admit, is a nice young man ... guess I won't have to kill him after all.) Where did the time go? It doesn't seem like 20 years. Susan and I will not have children, makes me wonder, what they would have looked like? ... the persons they would have become? Would they be as gentle, soft hearted and kind as their mother? Would the girls be as beautiful? Would they have her sense of compassion and her strong belief in God?

I wonder how many of our men and women in uniform, are missing the birthday of a loved one? Aren't birthdays, milestones in life? How many milestones are they missing, as a result of their service to our America ... their service to you and I? .... <whispering> .... _Please, Please, Please, God, let them all come home ... safe and soon! Please, God, let them celebrate the milestones in their lives! Be and sleep well, (I will .... holding my best friend, partner and the most beautiful woman I know) ... and, would you consider saying a prayer/sending good wishes, for the safe return of our men and women in uniform? If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. As Always ...

A Warm Brotherly Hug

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer, from Holden, Missouri)
