Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of July 1, 2005. Seems the news is full of one or another group of folks, fighting and killing each other. "Militia fighters using women and children as human shields battled with U.N. peacekeepers Monday in northeastern Congo, a U.N. spokesman said." ... and ... "A remotely controlled car bomb killed four civilians and wounded 29 others Monday in al-Jadeeda neighborhood of eastern Baghdad, police said." ... and ... "President Alvaro Uribe on Monday blamed poor military intelligence for a deadly weekend attack by leftist rebels in southwest Colombia, and announced a review of the government's strategy for defeating the guerrillas in the oil-rich region." ... and ... "Nepal's army claims Maoist rebels have abducted about 90 high school students from their classrooms last week." You have one person, with a mother and a father ... and brothers and sisters ... living a life. He/she has simple hopes and desires. Just wants enough to eat, not be cold, have a roof over their head ... and a person to share a life with. (Isn't that what we all want?) And yet, this person is driven to kill, for a cause? Why? What is it, about being human, that drives us to the heights of creativity, compels us to create such beauty, (our architecture, the sculptures, the paintings, the photographs, the songs, the music) ... and at the same time, drive some of us to abduct "90 high school students" , use "women and children as human shields" or plant a "remotely controlled car bomb" ? Is this political expression or just the actions of thugs? Share with me, how is it possible to draw a line between a "freedom fighter" and a terrorist"?

And with our altruism, strange dichotomies well funded campaigns of folks fighting for the rights of the unborn, so they can be ... while folks are struggling to support and pay for these children after they are. Our elected representatives cutting funding for every social program, that helps, assists, those who take care of these children ... while at the same time, enacting legislation to ensure the unwanted unborn, are born. Who will love these children? Who will provide for them, to ensure they have a life worth living? And folks adamantly against embryonic stem cell research because life begins at conception, remain silent about the artificially conceived embryos, laying dormant in the freezers of fertility clinics, (some, only to be discarded should they not be donated to other childless couples or used by their donor parents). Why is there such a focus on the sanctity of unborn human life, (Lord knows we don't give a damn about any other life forms ... like the multitude of species we have driven to the edge of extinction) ... and such incredible apathy about their well being, once they are born? Hasn't our focus on the unborn, resulted in children living at 3rd world poverty levels? Lives of hunger and despair? Isn't the net result, foster parents, (a place to park children) ... and grandparents, raising the children of their waste of skin offspring. With all the funding cuts, share with me, who will take care of, pay what it takes, for these unwanted children to have a chance in life? Wouldn't it be a better allocation of resources, to focus on the children already here?

"Canned Hunts". "Canned hunting is the killing of an animal in an enclosure to obtain a trophy ... from Maine to Arkansas, canned hunting operations are sprouting up all over. The HSUS, (Humane Society of the United States), estimates that there are more than 1,000 canned hunt operations in at least 28 states ... the following is a typical list of the species available and the "trophy fee" . Axis Deer, $1,350; Aoudad Sheep, $1,500; Fallow Deer, $1,350; Elk, $3,500 up; Red Sheep, $4,500. If a hunter is on a tight budget, he or she can always kill a boar for $50." Sickens me. How much is a "trophy" worth, when it takes no effort to earn it? You just buy it. Wouldn't a plastic reconstruction be worth as much? What does it say, about the character of a person who kills, not to eat, not to clothe themselves ... but to kill, in order to hang dead stuff on their walls, to impress friends. Years ago, I used to love hunting rabbits, (have a great recipe for "Cajun Rabbit"). Hunted them using a Ruger MKI, T 6 7/8, .22 caliber pistol, [just went to the Ruger Website ... Wow!!! ... I bought this pistol for $89.00 in 1978 ... it now sells for $460.00???], would walk around and "quick draw" on them. More often then not ... would come home empty handed ... more often than not, the rabbit won. And when it lost, it wasn't a trophy ... it was ... a very special, dinner. 'Nuff said.

On Tuesday night, listened to my President share his views and deliver a report to the American people, (the smallest TV audience of his tenure), about "the war on terrorism". He said the war began on 9/11. Of course, it began, way before his watch, (you do remember the first attack on the Towers, don't you?) I remember exactly, what I was doing when "The Towers" were hit on 9/11, (I was watching the morning news with Susan). I am willing to bet, you can remember what you were doing as well. Our President revived this memory to justify our invasion and presence in Afghanistan and Iraq, (no doubt, reasonable, honorable, persons can and will debate this issue) ... but ... the fact remains, our men and women in uniform, are, in harms way. I wonder about his assertion, that it is better to fight terrorists overseas, bring the fight to the enemy, than here in our America. Well, yeah!!?? But, isn't the real question, "Why is Iraq the magnet, for every Muslim nutcase, wishing to be a martyr?" But if it is, and it appears to be, (90% of suicide bombers are non-Iraqi) ... sure wish ... to support their efforts to get there. "Come to Iraq, Dude!" Be a martyr ... get a virgin ... enjoy paradise", (and we will do our best to help you get there). Listening to our President, the only thing that I could unequivocally agree with ... was his call to honor our men and women in uniform and their families, on July 4th. How could we not? These are our family, friends and neighbors, away, on the front line ... <smiling> ... doing humanitarian work assisting some pilgrims find paradise. Susan and I, WILL, do what we can, to show our support. (At the Cass County Courthouse on Monday, I saw a young Marine in line to go through the metal detectors ... I walked up to him, offered my hand and said, "Thank you for your service to our America." He just came to attention, and smiling said, "Thank You, Sir." Sometimes ... "priceless" doesn't cost a dime.) Would you join Susan and I?

"A group for mothers whose children died in war voted Monday to allow non-U.S. citizens to join, after coming under criticism for denying membership to a Filipina mother whose son was killed in Afghanistan." Gold Star Mothers. "Natural Mothers, who are citizens [and now, non-citizens] of the United States of America or of the Territorial and Insular Possessions of the United States of America, whose sons and daughters served and died in line of duty in the Armed Forces of the United States of America or its Allies, or died as a result of injuries sustained in such service, are eligible for membership in American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Adoptive Mothers and Stepmothers who reared the child from the age of five years whose natural mother is deceased, are also eligible under the above conditions." A mother's, (or father's), loss, is not citizen specific. It just hurts.

"China is asking for foreign assistance to help it confront the world's first major outbreak of avian flu in wild birds, an outbreak that threatens to spread thousands of kilometers next month when the birds begin to migrate." When was the last time you heard of China asking for foreign assistance? While here at home, ""This [the Avian Flu, H5N1] is arguably the most serious threat to human health in the world," said Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.). "Are we ready? Unfortunately, we are not." How could we be? Our mental munchkins in Washington are too busy playing partisan politics to worry about the greatest threat to our species, in the past couple of hundred years. Be worried.

Sitting here editing these Ramblings, sipping on some Creme Sherry while uploading changes to the Gallas-Schultz Website. Took their portraits, (the individual shots are posted ... as is the firm picture, when you click on the firm logo), and staff shots today. On the news, Justice O'Connor has resigned. She was the swing vote in 135 cases between 1994 and 2005. So ... for the summer, more political infighting, by our mental munchkins, to further their respective agendas ... while the business of the people gathers dust. Conservative Christians are already cheering a win, (and have a 35 million dollar war chest to make it happen). 35 million dollars would sure feed some of the unwanted children, they have managed to save ... wouldn't it? In Afghanistan, we have a missing reconnaissance team, (the best of the best). They will make it, if making it is any way possible, (and it always is). A big flap between Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields about postpartum depression. Tom doesn't believe in medication to treat it ... and Brooke feels Tom doesn't have a clue because he has never suffered from it. With all the stuff happening in the world ... share with me, why this would be on the national evening news? Luther Vandross passed away, (now that is news).

Susan and I will celebrate the 4th of July with quiet prayers for the safe return of our men and women in uniform, (especially the team that is missing in Afghanistan) ... <whispering> ... Please, Please, Please, God ... let them come home safe and soon. Look around you, while you have family and friends sharing food, good company ... and perhaps shooting off fireworks ... all in the safety of the place you call "home". There are folks on watch, so you can. Freedom has never been free, it has been dearly paid for ... and there are folks making payment now. Be and sleep well this extended 4th of July weekend and perhaps take a moment to honor the folks that are making it possible for you to do so. Thank them. If my post offends, I apologize, that is not my intent. As always ...

A Warm Brotherly Hug

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri).
