Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of April 7, 2006. I love the SFIG, it has been a major focus in my life, these past 10 years. I love the "give and take", in conversations. I love the dissent. I love the open dialogue/debate, between equals ... (I don't like the ad homonym attacks nor the finger pointing inherent to an open, un-moderated, free, forum ... a tactic used by those with less intellect , I guess, they find it necessary.)  But that is a necessary evil/price to pay.  I would encourage you to remain willing to pay it.  The SFIG remains a tool for change, to make the lives of Solo and Small Firm lawyers better, (didn't we get a statute of limitations for Bar Complaints?) We NEED a vacation rule, (to allow Solo and Small Firm guys to take a vacation with their families, in spite of the fact that Judges believe it is not necessary ... IT IS!!!) We NEED to know if a Bar Complaint is filed against us ... even if the OCDC decides not to investigate, (how else would puppy sharks know someone, including a fellow lawyer, feels stepped on enough to file one ... and allow puppy sharks to make a change, should one be necessary?) We need to police our profession ... but not in complaints filed, that remain secret and become part of our file, with the OCDC. And ... there remains much debate about courthouse security. Jackson, Cass, Clay and Platte counties offer a picture ID, to by-pass metal detectors, courthouse security. You have to pay each county, yearly, to get a picture ID, (but not in Cass ... Thank you, Judge Dandurand!!).  Court personnel have an ID tag and walk right in, (no charge).  I have not found one instance, EVER, of a lawyer, an officer of the court , causing physical harm in a courthouse. The courthouse is no less a place of business for us, as the folks who work there.  I would venture to say, you and I have undergone more of a background check, than the folks who work at the courthouse, like a clerk or maintenance person.  My point being, I guess ... together, you and I, have "married our fortunes together" on the SFIG, (and should the powers that be, decide to close down the SFIG ... we will continue on the MoSFIG), to make life better for Solo and Small Firm guys. This SFIG, this "House", is not one individual, but a "Family" of individuals ... who come and go .... contribute or not ... but know what a collective voice can accomplish ... this SFIG will continue to be, what it was designed to be:   a support group for Solo and Small Firm lawyers.

In religious news this week: MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- Study claims ice, not water, kept Jesus afloat. "The New Testament says that Jesus walked on water, but a Florida university professor believes there could be a less miraculous explanation -- he walked on a floating piece of ice ... Nof, a professor of oceanography at Florida State University, said on Tuesday that his study found an unusual combination of water and atmospheric conditions in what is now northern Israel could have led to ice formation on the Sea of Galilee." [Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:16-21,] ... and .... WASHINGTON (AP) -- Text might be hidden 'Gospel of Judas' "For 2,000 years Judas has been reviled for betraying Jesus. Now a newly translated ancient document seeks to tell his side of the story. The "Gospel of Judas" tells a far different tale from the four gospels in the New Testament. It portrays Judas as a favored disciple who was given special knowledge by Jesus -- and who turned him in at Jesus' request." All of the text is not available yet, but what has been translated gives an interesting view into Judas's side of the story. First, he makes clear, he was not paid 20 pieces of silver ... it was in fact ... 29 shekels and change. Second, he admits to being gay ... he was looking for 12 guys to hang with, after an unpleasant, sad, experience as a Shepard, ("They were all female, for God's sake!"), and a relationship with a fellow Shepard near "Broke Back Mountain Oasis". He shared, the "Last Supper" consisted of 1/4 pounder matzo burgers, catered by McMoishies ... and ... as for unleavened bread ... he didn't like it:   he preferred croissants with his smoked salmon.

BBC NEWS -- Hamas says PA coffers are 'empty'. "The Palestinian prime minister has told the first meeting of his Hamas-led cabinet that the government is facing a deep financial crisis ... He said the new leadership would do its best to pay the wages of more than 100,0000 Palestinian Authority workers." Imagine that? Hamas has refused and continues to refuse to recognize Israel. So Israel, (and it's supporters), should continue to contribute money to the folks dedicated to destroying it? So share with me ... just what would the Palestine Authorities tax base be? Other than suicide bomb manufacturing, is there a tax paying business infrastructure? ... <whispering> ... rumor has it, in order to raise money, they will start charging a one time fee/license to suicide bombers.

CHICAGO -- Obesity Epidemic Hits Child Safety Seats. "Many young children are too heavy for standard car-safety seats, and manufacturers are starting to make heftier models to accommodate them, according to research on the obesity epidemic's widening impact. More than a quarter of a million U.S. children ages 1 to 6 are heavier than the weight limits for standard car seats, and most are 3-year-olds who weigh more than 40 pounds, the study found." ... and ....  NY TIMES --- Child Obesity Picture Grim Among New York City Poor . "A baby only 3 months old can recognize voices. By the age of 1, that baby can learn to walk and talk and enjoy looking at picture books. Then, by the age of 2, there is a one-in-four chance that the child will be obese at least if he or she lives in New York City and is from a low-income family, according to a survey of preschool children released yesterday by the City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene."   ......   From the October 31,2003 Ramblings: "On Monday Night, watched a show on ABC about overweight kids, "Fat Like Me". Broke my heart to watch. Too many of our children are overweight. They are taunted, picked on and ridiculed by their schoolmates, their friends .... by their families: they suffer the pain of being "different". One quote stood out because it cut my heart: "They [overweight kids] are as SAD as children undergoing chemotherapy" ..... I cannot fathom how sad that could/would be. We are allowing our children to eat themselves to death. Is there a magic pill for childhood obesity? .... DOH!!! ..... Yup!!! It's called parental awareness! If YOU are overweight ... what would possibly make you believe your kid isn't or soon won't be? Wanna make a difference in your kid's life? ...... save your kids life? Make a change in YOUR life. Get trim .... set the example. More important .... hehehe ...... I have it on good authority that there is no greater joy in life than living long enough to remind your children, on a daily basis, about THEIR mistakes ...... I know Alan Steinberg lives for these "Kodak" moments .... hehehe ........ and also feel sure ..... Les hates them just as much!! :)" Things haven't changed, have they? I developed "My Diet" in 2003 --- I went from a size 48 portly to a size 44 regular, (48" waist to a 36" waist). Over the years, I have received a bunch of emails from folks who have managed their weight on "My Diet". It is easy to follow because it is not a "diet" ... it is just a way of looking at food differently. There is nothing to buy, the directions for "My Diet", (including links to over 15,000 recipes), are on my website: http://www.karltimmerman.com/diet.html. I have kept the weight off. If Mrs. Timmerman's little boy can do it ... so can you, (if not for yourself ... then for your children and the people that love you!).

BBC NEWS -- Al-Jazeera buys Welsh sheep show. "A Welsh-language children's show featuring musical sheep is to be shown on Arabic TV channel al-Jazeera ... The pre-school series, which will be shown on the al-Jazeera's children's channel, is described by S4C as "a live action series following the exploits of an extended family of musical, multi-racial sheep". It follows Greek father Costas, his Welsh wife Baalween, their daughter and grandchildren - and the highs and lows of the family recycling business." " Multi-racial Sheep "? I thought there were only white sheep ... and sheep of color? I didn't know there were "multi-racial" sheep! But, I guess, if you have an interest in pulling the wool over peoples eyes, buying sheep of color, makes sense.

MOSCOW TIMES --- Cult Leader Offering Resurrections Held. "A cult leader who promised to resurrect children killed in the Beslan school attack has been detained on suspicion of fraudulently obtaining money from parents of the victims, Moscow prosecutors said Thursday. Police detained Grigory Grabovoi during a seance Wednesday evening at the Kosmos Hotel in northeast Moscow ... Grabovoi said that month that he had signed agreements promising to resurrect some of the 186 children who perished in the September 2004 school hostage-taking. A total of 331 hostages died in the attack." There are predators in any society. But I have to admit, a person preying on a mother's grief is particularity heinous. The bad news? He's looking at only three years in a Russian prison. The good news? The Russian prison system is one of the most brutal in the world, (I think the next seance Grabovoi will be conducting ... will involve trying to resurrect his lost rectitude.)

SARASOTA, Florida (CNN) -- The other face of domestic violence. "When I met Leo, Paul and Tom at a domestic violence shelter here in Sarasota, Florida, it was hard to believe the three men's story: that they were victims of physical abuse at the hands of their female partners. Leo, who is about 6 feet tall and said he weighed more than 200 pounds at the time of the abuse, said his girlfriend terrorized him while he was recovering from a heart transplant ... All three men said they were reluctant to call police. Leo said he thinks in the case of a dispute, an officer would believe a woman's story over a man's. "Whether it happened or not, if she signs that affidavit, you're on your way to jail, you're on your way to jail, no investigation no anything." As a "love's aftermath" lawyer, I have seen my share of battered husbands. There are far more than we know .... because they are ashamed to come forward and prosecute "their little lady". I can also share, that there are a small number of folks who consider a black eye and a chipped tooth ... foreplay. I don't understand any form of violence in a relationship ... but then, I suppose, there are relationships where the "highs" are really high ... and the "lows" are really low. In my mind, the "highs" never justify the "lows".

TACOMA, Washington (AP) -- Feds try to seize suspects' fancy teeth. "Government lawyers tried to remove and confiscate the gold dental work known as "grills" or "grillz" from the mouths of two men facing drug charges. "I've been doing this for over 30 years and I have never heard of anything like this," said Richard J. Troberman, a forfeiture specialist and past president of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. ... Grills, popularized by rappers such as Nelly, are customized tooth caps made of precious metals and jewels and can cost thousands of dollars for a full set. Some can be snapped onto the teeth like an orthodontic retainer, and others are permanently bonded to the teeth." Hmmm ... after they are seized ... what do they do with them? Is there really a market for used "Grillz"? Sheesh!!! Of corse there is ... where else ... but on eBay!!!

Sitting here editing these Ramblings, (checking links), sipping on some Port and watching the evening news, (3 suicide bombers killed 74 Shia and wounded hundreds more ... the folks in Iraq remain spiraling closer to a full blown civil war). Susan is at a meeting with a friend to get information about becoming a "Stampin-up" dealer .... <shaking my head> ..... the love of my life has become infected with "Scrapbook Fever". She really does do some beautiful work ... and also makes "cards", (Boy!! Are we stockpiling cards!!!). I bought her a "Wishblade" for Christmas, (a computer controlled cutting machine). Course, the first thing Susan did, was join several Listserves and start downloading the computer files for cutting all types of shapes/alphabets, etc., each time, cutting samples and putting them in 3 ring binders so she can keep track of what she has .... she now has a library of over a thousand files!! .... <whispering> .... look in the dictionary under "organized" ... and note how good a picture of Susan you see. Pleases me to no end to see her have a passion ..... (smiling> .... I even pay attention when she shows me the cards she made at some card making class she attended ... she likes to get together with "the girls" and they share new card designs: make cards. Freud said, a life worth living has to have "Arbeit und Liebe", purpose and passion. She has found her "passion". Mine remains digital photography ... and making my Lady smile. Where would I be without her? Tonight as I go to sleep, curled around my Susan, I will say a prayer of thanks ... for being able to listen to her talk about the ideas she has for a new scrapbook ... or some card design .... and I will say a prayer for our men and women in uniform, (care to join me?) .... <whispering> ..... Please, Please, Please, God ... let them come home safe and soon ... to their "scrapbooker". Be and sleep well ... be thankful for the "scrapbook" you are making ... and know ... some scrapbooks will not be happy ones, (we continue to pray for Gregg, Mary and Chase). If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. As always ...

A Warm Brotherly Hug

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer, from Holden, Missouri.)
