Greets and Huggers. Post the evening of March 10, 2006. We
are social creatures, dependant on one another. Years ago, as "hunter
gatherers", we had no chance to survive as solo, independent animals, we
HAD to band together, develop a social structure to raise our children and
survive as a species. That social structure depended then, as it does now, on
mutual assistance, a sense of "family", "tribe" and
"nation". Years ago, while I was working on my Masters, Bill Ghiselli,
(Ph.D ... my advisor) and I were having lunch ... when he looked at me and
opined, "Mark my words ... in a few years, you will see the results of
the worst form of child abuse in America .... parents, that give their kid
everything". That was in the early 80's. Later, in the early 90's, the
"I'm Ok, You're OK", "Love Means Never Having To say
You Are Sorry", folks matured, married and started having babies.
"Me First"? Well these "babies" aren't "babies"
any more, they are coming on-line. The result? 6 out of 10 marriages now end in
divorce. Grandparents, raising their grandchildren, while their children,
enjoy, the "me first" lifestyle. You see, "Me First"
doesn't work in a marriage ... it doesn't work being a parent ... it doesn't
work in our profession ... it doesn't work in life ... it just, does not work.
Seems to me, today, our children expect a car at 16, designer clothes ... all
the "nice" things in life ... handed to them. No doubt a natural
reaction on our parts, to do so ... to make their lives better than ours was,
growing up ... give them the things we did not have. But at what price? A Mom
and Dad that have to work outside the home, to pay for these things? And how
much value, meaning, does something that is given to you have? How does a child
learn the value of work, (or perhaps, the correlation between eating and
working!) How do you teach a child that "being happy, satisfied" ...
is not measured in how much "stuff" you accumulate ... or ... that
the value of a friendship, is not measured by how many toys a friend has?
Doesn't the experience of having been hungry, make you appreciate food? If so,
doesn't the experience of having to do without ... make you appreciate things,
when you finally get them? As parents, what lessons do we teach our children by
giving them "things", (while having daycare centers and schools raise
them) .... because we are so busy working to buy "stuff" instead of
giving them the most valuable gift, (next to life) ... that we can give them:
EL FASHER, (IRIN) - SUDAN: Helping reduce women's vulnerability. "During a meeting on violence against women in Kabkabiya town, North Darfur, participants cannot agree whether a person who falls pregnant after being raped should be charged with adulter ... The consensus is that, if immediately reported, the crime should not lead to any charges, but some feel she should be arrested for adultery if she fails to report the rape before giving birth. " There is an on-going genocide in the Darfur region of the Sudan. Although the Islamic Sudanese government claims it is engaged in a civil war, it is in fact, "The Sudanese Government, using Arab "Janjaweed" militias, its air force, and organized starvation, is systematically killing the black Sudanese of Darfur." It is ethnic/religious cleansing by the Arab Muslims of the north against the Animist Blacks in the south. Over the past 20 years, over four million have been displaced and two million killed. It is the systematic annihilation of a people. There is no oil, the people are black and no one cares. If you do ... go to this Website, http://www.savedarfur.org/ and add your voice. (I did. I hope, having done so ... my next email address is not ... karl@Guantanamo.mil.org)
MBIHE-MOKELE, Congo (AP) -- 'Hippie chimps' fast disappearing as dinner. "Scientists are struggling to save the fast-disappearing bonobo, the gentle "hippie chimp" known for resolving squabbles through sex rather than violence. Unfortunately, bonobos are prized by Congolese for their tasty meat, and many villagers who are illegally hunting the wiry, wizen-faced apes don't realize how close their prey is to extinction ... The animals are known for greeting rival groups with genital handshakes and sensual body rubs. Bonobo spats are swiftly settled -- often with a French kiss and a quick round of sex." I have often wondered about the origins of the "French Kiss" .... it's a genetic thing! Obviously, these "monkeys" are part of the French evolutionary " Family Tree". Sure explains why the French have never won a war. Makes you wonder how heavy cream and garlic fit into the French psyche, doesn't it?
TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Scientists extract gasoline from cattle dung. "Scientists in energy-poor Japan said Friday they have found a new source of gasoline -- cattle dung. Sakae Shibusawa, an agriculture engineering professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, said his team has successfully extracted 1.4 milliliters (0.042 ounces) of gasoline from every 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of cow dung by applying high pressure and heat " ... What the report didn't share? It required 2 quarts of oil, to generate the heat necessary to produce .042 ounces of gasoline ... the article also did not report the scientist's warning label recommendation, (translated from the original Japanese): "WARNING: DO NOT LIGHT A CANDLE WITHIN TWO FEET OF A COWS ASS" ... In a separate experiment revealing another unusual business potential for cow dung, another group of researchers has successfully extracted an aromatic ingredient of vanilla from cattle dung." How in the world could "Vanilla" become a component of cow dung? I wonder what they feed their cows? Whatever it is, no doubt, the cows will be hungry again ... an hour after they eat. Makes you wonder what other "aromatic ingredients" they discovered, doesn't it? (Personally, I think that's where the "New Car" smell comes from in Japanese cars.) Perhaps we now know where the French got "Eau De Toilette"!
ZYWIEC, Poland (AP) -- Auschwitz photographer still sees images. "For years afterward, photographer Wilhelm Brasse saw them in his dreams -- emaciated Jewish girls, herded naked in front of his camera at Auschwitz. Eventually, his dreams stopped. But he never took pictures again." Just like WW II veterans, there are fewer living concentration camp survivors each year. Fortunately, many of their stories are documented. No doubt, the time will come when their stories will be discounted ... when the horrors they experienced, "just" history. Sadly, some, already claim the Holocaust is a myth.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Chertoff: Bird flu possible in U.S. within months. "Migratory birds could carry the avian flu virus to U.S. shores in the next few months, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff warned Thursday. Chertoff attempted to reassure the public by saying the federal government has experience in dealing with such outbreaks ... But Chertoff said the Department of Agriculture has successfully contained other outbreaks, and the federal government is working on a plan to prevent or mitigate future ones." Like you could really count on that? ... <whispering> .... does the word "Katrina" ring a bell??? I shared what I believed to be a time line, last year. So far, it has played out. Avian Flu will hit us within the next few months, (again, I pray I am wrong). You can no longer buy Tamiflu, (as I predicted a year and a half ago). You CAN still prepare: stockpile the necessities you use for a 90 day quarantine. In the past year, we have developed the technology to produce a recombinant vaccine within 30 days ... our government has licensed private industry to mass produce the vaccine within 60 days. Please, please, please ... set up your quarantine stash!!!
Sitting here editing these Ramblings and thinking about my visit at Whiteman Air Force Base, yesterday. Had a chance to see a B2, up close and personal. Shot some pics, (not as good as what I would normally be proud to share), and sat in the cockpit, (a very small space, (I could barely stand up), two seats, a microwave and a port-a-pottie). No cameras were allowed in the cockpit, (BTW: it is now called a "Flight Station", no doubt due to the number of female pilots :) At the lunch-in, (community appreciation ceremony) ... attended by some of our young warriors ... the speaker, after the "Pledge of Allegiance", asked "Veterans" to stand. We did. These young men and women in uniform and their officers, then applauded us. I must admit, it brought tears to my eyes .... <taking a sip of Port> ... still does, thinking about it. 21 B2's were built, the Base Public Relations Officer told us, that 18 are stationed at Whiteman AFB, 509 Bomb Wing in Missouri, and one at Edwards AFB, (makes you wonder where the remaining one is ... doesn't it?). They are all named "Spirit of ____", after States, except two, which are named "The Spirit of Kitty Hawk" and "The Spirit of America". They carry 24, 1 ton bombs ... (I tried to give them the address of my ex-wife ... but they didn't listen .... just kidding, just kidding!!! :) I was impressed, not so much by the hardware ... but more, by the quality, dedication and character of these examples of our men and women in uniform. God Bless them and keep them safe.
Tonight, as I fall asleep next to and holding my Susan, as I'm want to do, I will say a prayer of Thanks ... a prayer for the safe return of our men and women in uniform, (care to join me?) ... <whispering> .... Please, Please, Please, God .... let them come home safe and soon!! and for you. Be and sleep well, the best there is, is on watch so you can .... again .... please, set up your quarantine stash ... and if you can, send a contribution to "Family" members running for office, Janice Durbin, Matt Hill, Randy Head and Bret Rich. If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. As always ....
A Warm Brotherly Hug
