Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of February 4, 2006.   BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Sunni party quits Iraq government talks after mosque bombing. "Iraq's most powerful Sunni Muslim party quit talks to form a new government Thursday after reprisal attacks for the bombing of an important Shiite mosque." ... and .... Al Jazeera --- Deaths soar in Iraq shrine clashes. "More than 130 people are reported to have been killed in sectarian violence that has swept Iraq in the wake of a bomb attack on a major Shia shrine. In the worst single incident, officials said 47 people, who had taken part in a joint Sunni and Shia demonstration in Baghdad against Wednesday's bombing, were hauled from their cars and shot dead." The split between Sunni and Shia Muslims is over 1,100 years old, (just a tad older, than the Catholic/Protestant conflict in Ireland ... but every bit as deadly). The Shia are the "catholics", (having a central Imam, similar to a Pope ... are "fundamentalist" ... and believe in the second coming of the 12th Imam, (the end of the world) ... ) ... while the Sunni's, (20% of Iraq's population), are "protestants", (but also having a right-wing conservative faction .... sound familiar?), de-centralized, similar to mainstream protestants churches, in our America. Shia comprise the majority in both Iran and Iraq. Non-western observers all agree on one thing: sooner or later, there will be a show down between the two. " ... a Shia-Sunni showdown is in the offing. And with the United States set to formerly hand over power sometime this year, it will be interesting to see how long the peace will last before it degenerates into a civil war. It will also be interesting to see how other countries in the region will react to a Shia-controlled Iraq, especially those on its border-- Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Turkey and Syria are more concerned about Kurdish nationalism than the Sunni-Shia divide. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, is concerned on two fronts. Not only is it facing a Sunni insurgency, but it must deal with its own Shias, who, for the most part, have been kept in line, mostly by force. A Shia-controlled Iraq would not only embolden the Saudi Shias but Iran as well, whose sphere of influence would increase vastly. Regardless, the battle lines have been drawn and the players are just waiting for the opportune moment to fight it out. The question is: what will the United States do?" What could we do? As a practical matter, a review of the news since 2001 reports, Sunni's have been pushed out of Shia neighborhoods, and vice versa ... military/security forces have organized themselves as either Sunni units or Shia units and there are the militias maintained by Shia Imams. I would have to agree with the non-western commentators: there will be a civil war. Our response? The only one we can have. Hunker down and wait it out. I jokingly posted in a couple of Ramblings, that we should pull our troops back to the boarders of Iraq and seal them off ... the power vacuum would trigger a civil war. Once the civil war is over ... snuff whomever wins and repeat as necessary. Sadly, that may damn well be the way it plays out.

Der Spiegel --- Attacking the American Enemy on Screen. "The Turkish film "Valley of the Wolves" is drawing hundreds of thousands of viewers in both Turkey and Germany. It's also drawing harsh criticism. The movie is racist, anti-American and anti-Semitic say detractors. It's tempting to discount the flick as nothing more than Chuck Norris gone ethnic. A group of 11 Turkish officers are arrested by US soldiers, bags are pulled over their heads, and the men are dragged off. Seeing the officers' honor besmirched, a Turkish intelligence agent goes postal and -- reminiscent of a long Hollywood tradition -- heroically puts his life on the line as he goes after the godless Americans. Not terribly compelling from an artistic point of view." Sad isn't it ... that in some parts of the world, (like Germany???) ... we are viewed as the "bad guys"? How did that come about? Something we did?

CANBERRA, Australia (Reuters) -- Tiger poo, the new black gold. "A tiger's roar might be scary, but Australian researchers have found that the predator's poo is just as potent. Researchers at the University of Queensland said on Friday they had successfully trailed a tiger poo repellant, warding off wild goats for at least three days ... Murray said the repellant, made of fatty acids and sulfuric compounds extracted from tiger excrement, also worked on feral pigs, kangaroos and rabbits and might deter deer, horses and cattle too." I can honestly share with you ... it would repel me as well!! ... and .... SAN FRANCISCO, (Reuters): Converting dog poop into energy. "San Francisco, a leader in urban recycling, is preparing to enlist its canine population for a first in the US: Converting dog poop into energy. Norcal Waste Systems, the city's garbage company, plans to test collection carts and biodegradable bags in a city-centre park popular with dog walkers. A city study found that almost 4% of all the garbage picked up at San Francisco homes was from animal waste, Norcal Waste spokesman Robert said. San Francisco has an estimated 120,000 dogs." Well, at Ft Timmerman, (6 cats and 4 dogs) ... I hate to think what percentage of our household waste is "bio-degradable!! I wonder if there are any studies comparing the methane content of dog poo versus cat poo? Can you picture a vehicle powered by cat poo? I wonder if they would call it a "Cougar"? Does the engine "purr"? As an aside, Susan put a bird feeder next to our concrete pond. The birds have blessed us with an amply fertilized yard. Mother Nature is indeed a wonder!!

BBC NEWS -- 'Faster emergence' for diseases. "New infectious diseases are now emerging at an exceptional rate, scientists have told a leading conference in St Louis, US. Humans are accumulating new pathogens at a rate of one per year, they said ... Most of these new infectious diseases, such as avian influenza and HIV/Aids, are coming from other animals. "This accumulation of new pathogens has been going on for millennia - this is how we acquired TB, malaria, smallpox," said Professor Mark Woolhouse, an epidemiologist at the University Of Edinburgh, UK." As a species, we have survived all of these natural onslaughts. Our immune systems adapt and evolve. It's called "Natural Selection" ... not "Creation Science".

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Turned 50? Fail this test and you might not see 54. "It sounds like a perfect parlor game for baby boomers suddenly confronting their own mortality: What are your chances of dying within four years? Researchers have come up with 12 risk factors to try to answer that for people over age 50. This is one game in which you want a low score. Zero to 5 points says your risk of dying in four years is less than 4 percent. With 14 points, your risk rises to 64 percent." [Note: the "Quiz" is linked on the articles page --- I could not link to it here.] Mine is 4 points.

Africa is going down the "we shoot ourselves in the foot" toilet. HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) -- Zimbabwe: Inexperienced farmers producing poor harvest. "The deputy agriculture minister forecast bleak food harvests this year in Zimbabwe, and blamed fertilizers shortages and technical ignorance among black farmers resettled on formerly white-owned land, a state-run newspaper reported Monday. ... Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. His chaotic land redistribution campaign begun in 2000 caused an exodus of white farmers, crippled the economy, and ushered in widespread shortages of basic commodities. Ignoring international condemnation, MUGABE rigged the 2002 presidential election to ensure his reelection." ... and ....  KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) -- Congolese seek refuge on floating islands. "Thousands of civilians have taken refuge on floating islands in the lakes of Congo's Katanga province to escape rape and murder by government and militia fighters, a top U.N. humanitarian official said on Thursday. Some 120,000 people have fled their homes in the remote Mitwaba area, where hundreds of women have been raped during fighting between the army and former pro-government militiamen that U.N. peacekeepers are unable to control, he added." ... and .... GENEVA, Switzerland (Reuters) -- U.N.: 11 million in Africa may starve. "As many as 11 million people are threatened with starvation across east Africa because of a combination of drought and conflict, a U.N. special investigator warned on Monday. Urging donor countries to come immediately to their aid, Jean Ziegler, U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food, said that pre-famine conditions were increasingly being reported throughout the region." ... and ... ENUGU , Nigeria (Reuters) -- Religious mobs rampage again in Nigerian cities. "Muslim and Christian mobs took to the streets of three Nigerian cities on Friday and killed at least four people, extending a week of tit-for-tat religious riots that have claimed at least 150 lives." Don't these kind of developments beg the question ... "Why should we help"? Really, WHY should we help? Aren't these self inflicted wounds? The government of Zimbabwe converts highly productive "White Owned" farms ... to subsistence farming, "Black Owned farms: Zimbabwe changes from a food exporting nation, to a food importing nation?? The leadership of Africa using foreign aid, to keep themselves in power, while preying on their fellow Africans. All the while, AIDs is rampant, (1 in 4 people in Zimbabwe is HIV positive.) and 1/3 of African Nations are involved in a civil war. So share with me ... what are we fueling, with our foreign aid dollars?

Sitting here editing these Ramblings and listening to the evening news: speculations about a civil war in Iraq. Avian Flu is now rampant in the Far East, the Near East, Europe and Africa, (one mutation away from easy human to human transmission) ... you do have your 90 day quarantine stash ... don't you? (Didn't I also suggest you get you and your family a stash of Tamiflu ... over a year ago? You didn't listen then either, did you? Have you tried getting Tamiflu now??) Susan and I are set, we have our stash ... and we have enough dog and cat poo, to power Ft Timmerman for years, (I just need to build that damn conversion plant). Please, please, please ... all kidding aside, set up a 90 day quarantine stash. The stuff, like food, (hehehe ... and toilet paper!!!! ), meds and whatever you, your family and your pets require, should you not be able to leave your home ... for 90 days.

Found out today, I will have to run in a primary ... <sigh> ... if my other party opponent does not ... I will lose. I will have to expend all my money on the primary, having none left for the general election. So much for "party unity" ... hehehe ... not a bad thing, I suppose ... since it will put Libertarians on an equal footing with the two major parties! :) I guess something to think and pray about, tonight, as I curl myself around my Susan ... and whisper a prayer of thanks for being able to do so ... as I drift off to sleep .... and a prayer for the safe return of our men and women in uniform, (care to join me?) ... <whispering> ..... Please, Please, Please, God ... let them come home safe and soon!!! Be and sleep well, be grateful and thankful for what you have ... our men and women in uniform are guarding the Fort, so you may do so. If my post offends, I apologize ... that is not my intent. As always ...

A Warm Brotherly Hug

Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer, from Holden, Missouri)
