"the List"

JANUARY 16, 2004

The "Ramblings" are a series of emails sent, for the most part, on Friday night, to the Missouri Solo and Small Firm Internet Group, ("the List"),  listserve.    "The List" is a "support" group, a virtual "family", comprised of Missouri Solo and Small Firm Lawyers. It is not affiliated with the Missouri Bar Association: "the List"  is self governing and self moderating. Compiled here are the Ramblings for 2002 - 2003.  They contain my random thoughts and observations on current events and my life as a Solo Lawyer. They are the Ramblings of a small town, (Holden, population 2,700), Missouri, country lawyer.

Greets and Huggers.  Posted the evening of January 16, 2004.   When John Kennedy ran for office, there was a  great debate about having a CATHOLIC in office, (wouldn't he be subject to the Pope?)  Turned out not to be an issue then ..... but now .... this: Kansas City Star, January 11, 2004, "A Roman Catholic bishop... [Bishop Raymond Burke] .... said that lawmakers who support abortion can no longer receive Holy Communion ......  Pro-Life Wisconsin hailed Burke's decree as a victory against abortion, saying it would help the group hold all Christian politicians and voters responsible for upholding "natural and moral law". "Natural and moral law"?  Isn't the only "natural law", "Kill or be killed"?  As for "moral law"  .....  isn't that dependant on your belief structure? So .... our elected representatives are now subject to their local Minister/Rabbi/Iotola  and our CATHOLIC elected representatives subject to the Pope?  Didn't think being a Christian subjected me to anything ..... only, being forgiven for my many shortcomings  ..... and redemption.  Maybe the way to go is to have a personal relationship .... a "one on one" with God, (I  ..... <smiling>..... believe I do  ..... if not, sure have wasted a lot of time chatting with Him.)  So, Bishop Raymond Burke called for a "Jihad" against folks who believe a woman should have the "right" to choose?  Maybe .....  just a thought ........   maybe ....... Bishop Burke should spend more of his time thinking about protecting the unborn from pedophile priests.    'Nuff said.

Lewis Carroll, (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson 1832 - 1898),  this week.  He was an English logician, mathematician, photographer, and novelist, especially remembered for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and its sequel, "Through the Looking-Glass" (1871)."   Not well known, is the fact that he also wrote poetry , (ie. "Jaberwocky":his poem "The Hunting of the Snark" (1876) is nonsense literature of the highest order) and some excellent essays:  my favorite?  "Two Clocks", "Which is better, a clock that is right only once a year, or a clock that is right twice every day?" (hehehe .... you'll have to read it, to get the answer :)   In 1855 he developed an interest in photography and became highly proficient.   As a photographer, (note, that this link contains complete sets of pictures), he loved to do portraits, especially of little girls, (doing nude "character studies" until he abruptly stopped taking pictures altogether in 1881). Go figure.

The Jabberwocky

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arm, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.
Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe

<chuckling> ... thought I'd share this, since his prose reminds me of Gary B!!

It is a cold and rainy evening here at
Ft. Timmerman:  the fireplace is blazing and we are all warm and cozy..  Still learning how to use my Panasonic FZ10:  took a picture of "booger", (the psycho-cat) and posted it earlier.  Susan now has her insulin pump , (Paradigm Wireless Diabetes Management System)  attached, (she has been assimilated by the "Borg").   The unit is the size of a small pager with a very thin plastic hose that attaches to a needle inserted in her abdomen.  She tests her blood sugar level, pushes a button and the unit automatically calculates and injects the correct amount of insulin.  At night, the unit sits in a small pouch worn on a cloth belt, (or can be attached to your PJ's).  You can detach the plastic tube from the injector, for up to an hour at a time. Way cool!!!  The only thing that saddens me  ..... is, that there are way too many folks who can not afford the $6,000.00 price tag nor the cost of supplies.  On a different note, seems the folks in Iraq are killing each other at a faster rate than injuring our men and women in uniform, according to the Kansas City Star, there is a rash of vengeance killing of former Baath Party officials and Saddam Fayadeen  ..... <sigh> ...... roadside bombs are killing civilians, especially children.  Sitting here sipping on some BBB, editing these Ramblings and thinking about curling up next to the most gorgeous "Borg" I know, (also the only "Borg" I know :)   Tonight, I will say a special "Thank You" prayer for having the resources to get an insulin pump:  a prayer for the innocent civilians being killed in Iraq  ....  and most important,  for the families of   .....  and our men and women in uniform, (Please, please, please Lord ..... let them come home safe and soon.)   hehehe  .....  I'll put in a good word for you as well :)   Be and sleep well, the best there is, is on watch so you can.   If my post offends ......  I apologize .... that is not my intent.
A Warm Brotherly Hug
Karl  (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri)
