A MISSOURI LAWYER'S
FRIDAY NIGHT RAMBLINGS
Missouri Solo and Small Firm Internet Group
JANUARY 9, 2004
The "Ramblings" are a series of emails sent, for the most part, on Friday night, to the Missouri Solo and Small Firm Internet Group, ("the List"), listserve. "The List" is a "support" group, a virtual "family", comprised of Missouri Solo and Small Firm Lawyers. It is not affiliated with the Missouri Bar Association: "the List" is self governing and self moderating. Compiled here are the Ramblings for 2002 - 2003. They contain my random thoughts and observations on current events and my life as a Solo Lawyer. They are the Ramblings of a small town, (Holden, population 2,700), Missouri, country lawyer.

Greets and Huggers. Posted the evening of January 9, 2004. All week long looked with amazement at the pictures being beamed back from Mars by "Spirit", 2004. A triumph of American technology, (the British are still waiting for "Beagle" to bark .... don't think that dog will hunt ..... personally, after watching Austin Powers, I think they should have spent the money on their national dental program.) Our space telescope, Hubble, was able to take some "in your face" pictures of Mars this past August: sink your teeth into these :)
According to "Nature" Magazine: "New analyses suggest that 15–37% of a sample of 1,103 land plants and animals would eventually become extinct as a result of climate changes expected by 2050." The "climate changes" are a result of "global warming". Got news, cockroaches and mosquitoes won't be among the missing. According to the EPA, there is a sharp increase of "greenhouse gasses" in my America. "Methane", one of the "greenhouse gasses" is a by-product of digestion. "Over the last two centuries, methane concentrations in the atmosphere have more than doubled, largely due to human-related activities." EPA Since 1950, the world's population has increased from 2.5 billion to 6.3 billion. Our diet has changed .... we eat alot more, resulting in our species "breaking wind", (producing methane), more than ever before ..... and so are our livestock. The question I have ... I'm not one to cast doubt .... but where is the olfactory evidence? If all this "breaking of wind" is causing "global warming" .... how come, I can't smell it? 'Nuff said.
Read in the Kansas City Star today that Rep. Wayne Cooper, (and six other Republican legislators, Reinhart, Davis, Nieves, Phillips, Emory and Hunter), have introduced legislation, (HB 911), to force science teachers to teach "intelligent design", (devote equal time to "intelligent design", when teaching about the origins of life on earth), in public schools. In a nutshell, "intelligent design" holds that the earth and everything in and on it was created by "intelligent design",(God), about 6,000 years ago. HB 911, "would require school science curriculum to define evolution as a theory resting on a historical hypothesis that has not and cannot be proved". This is basically the same "science" that was adopted by the Kansas Board of Education in 1999 and repealed by the new Kansas Board of Education, (the old board was laughed out of office), both in 2001. Rumor has it that an early version of HB 911 contained verbiage mandating equal time for Claudius Ptolemy's "Almagest" with "De Revolutionibus", by Nicholas Copernicus (you know, the "theory", that the earth revolves around the sun, rather than the other way around, as thought and taught by Aristotle ). I wonder if our good legislators debated whether the earth was truly round? :)
Was dumbfounded to learn that farm raised salmon is a possible carcinogen. Didn't even know that salmon could be "farm raised". Seems "farm raised" salmon is high in "polychlorinated biphenyls", PCB's and PCB is a known carcinogen. The fish are fed pellets which are comprised of concentrated ground up feeder fish. The processing condenses chemicals, (consumed by the feeder fish), which have leaked or leached into the environment. Experts now recommend that folks should eat "farm raised" salmon, no more than once a month. But wait a minute .... aren't "farm raised" Tilapia , Trout and Catfish fed the same pellets? The FDA recommends no more than 7 ounces of Shark or Swordfish per week, due to mercury content. Then there's mad cow steaks and genetically modified corn, corn which produces it's own pesticide, to worry about. I'm beginning to think the only safe food left is my pickles ....... and pork and beans, (and of course: chicken). It looks like, unless you graze in your organic garden and eat kibbles and twigs, you are going to get cancer and die. On second thought, forget the beans ..... their consumption can only lead to increased "global warming"!!
I don't read the Christian Science Monitor, but did run across an interesting link to one of their pages: "Healthcare Costs Are Up: Here Are The Culprits." Some facts gleaned from the Internet: health care spending in my America surged to $1.6 trillion in 2002, (about $5,440.00 for each American). Drug companies spend as much on advertising as they do new product development, (about $20 billion). American pharmaceutical firms employ one sales person for every physician in the country. In 1960, national health care expenses were $26.7 billion and represented only 5.1 percent of the gross domestic product. In 1999, health care costs had risen to $1.2 trillion: 13% percent of our gross domestic product. Today, health care consumes 1/4 of the Federal budget and 15% of our gross domestic product. We spend 47% more than the next highest spending developed nation: Switzerland. So why is it that average life expectancy is greater in Western Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand: not in my America?? It must be because we spend too much time eating tainted salmon and "breaking wind".
Sitting here watching "Max", (Gluteus Maximus) playing with "Tuxie", (the Yorkies are asleep on Susan's desk), sipping on some BBB and editing these Ramblings. On the news tonight, folks scrambling to get "3D glasses" to view the "Mars" pictures. Geez!!! The wireless model goes for $99.99! ..... <sigh> ...... and more life lost in Iraq. Had a client deploy this week for Iraq. Did a "Will" for him, (Lord. Please ... please ... please ..... let it not be necessary!!!) He is also a veteran of "Desert Storm". As he was walking out the door .... I stopped him and thanked him for serving our America. He looked at me and said, (as he came to attention), "No Sir! Thank You!! You served and when you came home, no one thanked you. When my unit came back from "Desert Storm", there were crowds there to welcome us home .... us younger guys made sure the Viet Vets in our unit got off the plane FIRST .... out of respect ...". We looked into each others eyes and shook hands. Freedom is not free, it has been dearly paid for: there are men and women in uniform making payments on our behalf as we speak. As I drift off to sleep tonight, (curled around the most beautiful woman I know), I will say a special prayer for him and his family. ..... <sigh> .... sitting here thinking about ...."We made sure they got off the plane first.." There are some who have never gotten off the plane .... there are some who never will. We should all make sure they get off the plane first and tonight, a prayer for them as well. Blame who you will for how we got here or if we even needed to .... but by all means, support our men and women in uniform. Be and sleep well .... the best there is, is on watch so you can. If my post offends, I apologize ..... that is not my intent.
A Warm Brotherly Hug
Karl (the dumb ole country lawyer from Holden, Missouri)
